"Cowschwitz" vs. Pollan
Michael Pollan, the author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food" has had a speaking engagement at the public university Cal Poly San Luis Obispo modified after the Harris Ranch Beef Co. threatened to withhold possible future financial contributions to the school. Harris Ranch is a horror feedlot cattle operation dubbed "Cowschwitz" by many critics.
Shame on a public university for kowtowing to a corporate bully. Universities are supposed to be marketplaces of ideas, and Pollan deserves his right to speak. Can the university line up speakers with opposing views to Pollan? Sure, of course, they should. But they shouldn't restrict his presentation or modify it in any way because a wealthy donor complains.
Harris Ranch supplies hamburger meat to the In-N-Out chain, as well as to grocery stores nationwide. If you want to speak with your wallet, consider avoiding their products.
